KENT, Ohio- No. 15 Edinboro closed out Sunday's dual by winning four straight matches in a 27-12 victory over Kent State at McComb Fieldhouse. A 3-2 win by junior Tyler Buckwalter knotted the dual 12-12 after six matches, before the Fighting Scots pulled away.
Riding time proved to be the difference in three separate Edinboro victories. Del Vinas dropped a 2-1 decision to Kory Mines, Mike Vollant came up short against Patrick Jennings 4-3, and Mike DePalma fell to Dave Habat 4-3, all on riding time points. Habat entered the weekend ranked No. 2 in three different polls.
"All three of our guys wrestled pretty well, but just didn't have the sense of urgency they needed from the bottom," Head Coach Jim Andrassy said of the riding time losses. "For Mike DePalma, it was the best he looked all season. We felt like he outwrestled (Habat), and if he's able to get away early in the third, I think he wins the match."
Buckwalter, Mack McGuire and Ian Miller all went 2-0 on the weekend, following Sunday wins. Buckwalter extended his dual meet winning streak to nine, with a 3-2 decision over Casey Fuller on three escapes.
"Their guy needed injury time after a scramble in the third," Andrassy said. "So Tyler was able to take bottom and got out. His theme lately has been finding ways to win."
Miller was dominant in his third period in a 17-2 technical fall over Kasey Davis. Leading by five after two periods, Miller put Davis on his back twice and scored at the buzzer to give Kent State an extra bonus point.
McGuire gave the Golden Flashes an early 4-3 lead with a 12-3 major decision over Anthony Rivera. Leading 2-0 after the first period, McGuire took control with six points in the second.
With his team trailing 21-12 heading into the final match, an aggressive Mimmo Lytle got caught in a cow-catcher and was pinned in the opening minute.
The Fighting Scots improved to 9-4, while the Golden Flashes fell to 6-8 on the year. Kent State returns to action Saturday, visiting NC State.
