Junior Tyler Buckwalter extended his dual meet winning streak to 10 in dramatic fashion, but NC State took 6-of-10 matches Saturday afternoon in a 26-13 win over Kent State. Juniors Mack McGuire, Ian Miller and Cole Baxter also picked up wins for the Golden Flashes inside Reynolds Coliseum.
Buckwalter claimed an 8-7 victory over No. 17 Max Rohskopf in a match that featured a little bit of everything. Rohskopf led 5-2 in the second period and logged over a minute of riding time by the third while leading 5-3. On two separate occasions, Buckwalter began to shake free from the bottom and Rohskopf was called for locking hands.
"He put himself in position a couple of times, where the other guy has to either give up a reversal or escape, or lock his hands," Assistant Coach Josh Moore said.
An escape and a late takedown gave Buckwalter a lead. From the top position, Buckwalter was called for his third caution. Rohskopf was then originally credited with a reversal at the buzzer that would have given him a 9-8 win. The call was overturned after replay review. Â
Miller picked up three takedowns and a riding time point in his 8-3 victory over Chad Pyke.
"I think their guy tried to push the pace and try to wear Ian down," Moore said. "He tried to frustrate him and make him work. That's going to make Ian better.
Baxter effectively fought off shots by Michael Macchiavello in a 1-0 win. Scoreless after two periods, Baxter quickly escaped from bottom in the third.
McGuire gave the Flashes a 4-0 lead with a 10-2 major decision over Chris Wilkes.Â
"Mack is learning to wrestle better in the third period, which is what we've been asking of him," Head Coach Jim Andrassy said.
Redshirt freshman Jerald Spohn put together solid second and third periods, but an early deficit resulted in a 9-5 loss to Nicky Hall.
"For jumping up two weight classes against one of the top recruits in the country and scoring a couple of takedowns says a lot about him," Moore said of Spohn.  "He's definitely learning from his time in the lineup. He needs to stay in control in the first period."
Junior Mike DePalma was pinned in the first period after putting himself in a high-risk position.
"Mike needs to have better mat awareness and understand where his back's at," Moore said.
The Golden Flashes take on Old Dominion Sunday at 1 p.m.
