The Mid-American Conference announced Wednesday afternoon that nine Kent State field hockey student-athletes were named 2014 Academic All-MAC honorees. Abbie Carrico, Hannah Faulkner, Susanne Felder, Alayna Harris, Krysti Lober, Alexis Madeira, Shannon Martin, Missy Ramsey and Sami Surdy all received the distinction.
Members of the Academic All-MAC team have to have a cumulative grade point average of at least a 3.2 and participate in 50% of the team's games for that season. Freshman and first-year players are not eligible.
Nine honorees is the second-most in Kent State history since the accolade was first given in the 1986 season. The Golden Flashes had ten honorees in 2013.
Seniors Carrico, Faulkner, Martin and Surdy have received the honor all three years of their career while Ramsey is a first-time Academic All-MAC recipient. All three juniors (Felder, Harris, and Madeira) are two-time honorees while Lober represents the sophomore class with her first academic award.
The team met their academic goal in the fall, compiling a 3.44 GPA for the semester. The success in the classroom mirrors the success on the playing field, as the 2014 squad won a share of the MAC regular season title, was crowned MAC Tournament champions and won the first NCAA Tournament game in program history to become one of the final 16 teams in the nation.
Practice began this week for the semester with the spring season set to begin in April.
