HAMPTON, Va.- Kent State settled for a 1-2 Friday at the Virginia Duals, closing the day out with a 23-9 victory over The Citadel inside Hampton Coliseum. The Golden Flashes dropped their opener to Arizona State 31-6, before coming up short against No. 6 Virginia Tech 29-15.
Juniors Mack McGuire (133) and Tyler Buckwalter (165) each went 3-0 on the day. Buckwalter has wins in his last six duals, while McGuire has seven consecutive dual victories.
McGuire gave the Flashes an early 6-3 lead over the Hokies with an unorthodox second period pin of Kevin Norstrem. Trailing 3-2, McGuire got in deep on an inside single leg shot.
"Mack could have popped his hips to the side to finish the takedown, but he just stacked him and held him on his shoulders," Head Coach Jim Andrassy said.
Another pin against Virginia Tech came from junior Cole Baxter in the first period against Jared Haught. Following a takedown, Baxter threw in a pair of boots from the top and turned Haught with a power half. Haught was No. 15 in this week's Wrestling Report rankings.
After five matches against The Citadel, Kent State trailed 9-6 heading into Buckwalter's match. Working diligently from the top position, Buckwalter came away with a 16-1 technical fall, giving the Flashes the lead (11-9) for good.
"He continues to improve," Andrassy said of Buckwalter. "He's being patient, more selective and taking good shots."
The most exciting match of the day came at 174, when redshirt freshman Jerald Spohn edged The Citadel's Ken Radford, 7-5 in sudden victory.
"He wrestled up a weight for the team and went really, really hard," Andrassy said. "He took a shot in overtime. And after a lot of rolling around, he wound up on top."
The Flashes also got victories against The Citadel from Baxter, senior Tyler Small, junior Mike Vollant and sophomore Mimmo Lytle.
A late schedule change gave the Flashes a third dual on Friday and just one on Saturday.
With three starters still out of the lineup, Kent State will close out the Virginia Duals Saturday against Chattanooga at 10 a.m.
