The Kent State women's soccer team defeated Western Michigan, 2-1, on Friday afternoon at Zoeller Field. The Golden Flashes erased a 1-0 halftime deficit with two second-half goals from juniors Brittany Maisano and Jenna Hellstrom. The victory improved Kent State to 6-3-2 and 2-1-0 in Mid-American Conference play, while the Broncos dropped to 5-3-2 overall and 2-1-0 in the league.
After a first-half goal by Irene Young of Western Michigan, Miasano answered with the equalizer in the 68th minute. Maisano, who was just inside the 18-yard box on the left side of the goal, received a pass from Hellstrom. Maisano then struck from 15-yards out into the top right corner to knot the score at 1-1.
With under five minutes remaining in the game, Hellstrom tallied the game-winner for Kent State. Hellstrom flicked a pass from Jaime Eiben past Broncos' goalkeeper Stephanie Heber. Hellstrom's goal was her team-leading eighth of the season, while she also leads the team with seven assists.
After a slow start in the first half, the Golden Flashes controlled the last final minutes of the game. Kent State outshot Western Michigan 7-1 in the second-half and 10-4 for the game. The Golden Flashes also outworked the Broncos for a 5-4 advantage in corner kicks. Kent State is now unbeaten at home with a 3-0-1 home record.
Kent State is back in action at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 4 when it faces Northern Illinois.
