
Women’s Soccer Hosts Western Michigan & Northern Illinois

KENT, Ohio- The Kent State women's soccer team will host Western Michigan (5-2-2, 2-0-0 MAC) at 4 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 2 and Northern Illinois (2-7-0, 1-1-0) at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 4. Free video and live stats will be provided via kentstatesports.com.
The Golden Flashes went 1-1-0 to open Mid-American Conference play last weekend. Kent State defeated Akron, 3-1, last Friday night but fell 1-0 to Buffalo on Sunday. Junior forward Jenna Hellstrom (Sudbury, Ontario) tallied one goal for the Flashes' and sophomore Donavan Capehart (Orient, Ohio) tallied two.
Kent State (5-3-2, 1-1-0 MAC) is out-scoring its opponents 18-9 and boasts a 156-128 advantage in shots. Hellstrom leads the attack with 20 points on seven goals and six assists. Hellstrom not only leads the Mid-American Conference in most offensive categories, but also ranks 13th in the nation in points per game and 14th in total points.
Capehart is next in scoring for the Flashes' with eight points on four goals, while sophomore Hayden Pascoe (Belle Vernon, Pa.) follows with seven points (2g, 3a).
Freshman Ashleah McDonald (Langley, B.C.) has started in eight games between the pipes and is 5-2-1 on the year with one shutout. She has allowed just six goals (0.75 gaa) and has 36 saves (0.857).
About WMU:
Western Michigan improved to 5-2-2 and 2-0-0 in the MAC after defeating Central Michigan and Toledo last weekend. Goalkeeper Sarah Heber was named Defensive Player of the Week after a total of eight saves in two shutout wins.
Emma Kahn leads the offense with 11 points on five goals and one assist, followed by Irene Young with nine points on three goals and three assists.
The Golden Flashes and Broncos will meet for the 19th time, with Kent State leading the all-time series 9-6-3. Kent State defeated Western Michigan 3-1 last year in Kalamazoo.
About NIU:
Northern Illinois entered the weekend 2-7-0 with 1-1-0 mark in MAC play after a 2-0 win vs. Toledo and a 2-0 loss to Central Michigan last weekend. Nicole Gobbo leads the scoring with seven points (3g, 1a), followed by Lauren Gierman with four points on two goals.
Mackenzie Lee and Amy Annala have split time between the pipes for NIU. Lee has started in four games and has allowed eight goals (1.88 gaa) and has 11 saves (.579) for a 1-3-0 record. Annala is 1-4-0 on the year and has allowed nine goals (1.89gaa) and has 24 saves (.727).
The Golden Flashes will meet NIU for the 20th time, and holds just a 6-9-4 record in the all-time series. The Golden Flashes have not defeated the Huskies since the 2011 season. The two teams tied 1-1 in double overtime last season in DeKalb.
