
Soccer Ties Miami 0-0; Falls in Penalty Kicks, 5-3

KENT, Ohio- After a 0-0 double overtime tie in Kent State's MAC Championship quarterfinal match vs. Miami today, the Redhawks defeated the Golden Flashes 5-3 in penalty kicks to advance to the semifinals.
The Golden Flashes ended the season with an 11-6-3 record with a 7-4-0 mark in Mid-American Conference play. Miami will now advance to the semifinals with a 10-7-2 record and a 6-4-1 record in the MAC.
"It was so disappointing to end our season in that manner," said Head Coach Rob Marinaro. "I am so proud of our effort and fight today. The team poured their hearts out today and have nothing to be ashamed of."
It was a defensive battle at Dix Stadium this afternoon, as Kent State goalkeeper Ashleah McDonald held an opponent without a goal for the fourth time this year. Against Miami, McDonald worked 110 minutes, recording five saves on 16 shots. With her performance today, McDonald ended her rookie campaign with 80 saves (.081 save percentage) and allowed just 19 goals (1.03 gaa).
On the other side, Vic Maniaci, who leads the MAC in shutouts (9) and goals against average (0.62), posted four saves on 14 shots by the Golden Flashes. Leading the Kent State attack was freshman Paige Culver, sophomore Kristen Brots and redshirt sophomore Donavan Capehart, who tallied three shots apiece. Capehart had two on target.
Miami's Dana Miller led the attack with four shots, including one on goal, and Jess Bronke tallied three shots for the RedHawks.
Kent State tallied nine shots in regulation, four in the first overtime and one in the second overtime period. The Golden Flashes also held an 8-5 lead in corner kicks.
