KENT, Ohio- Kent State University Athletics and the Sports Administration Department teamed up to fulfill a $25,000 scholarship endowment for former Golden Flash, Isaac Newton Perkins.
"Isaac is someone that touched many people in the athletic department on and off the track, and it's fantastic to be able to help him and his family continue to give back to a program that meant so much to Isaac and his family," said Kent State assistant track & field coach Phil Rickaby.Â
Perkins, a native of Columbus where he attended Grove City High School, arrived at Kent State to run track & field in 1998. A team captain, Perkins was a four-year letterwinner in the triple jump and earned a MAC Championship ring in 2000.
In 2004, Perkins completed his master's degree in sports administration and began working as a compliance and eligibility director. That same year he was also diagnosed with primary sarcoma of the brain. On Nov. 9, 2005, Perkins lost his 15-month battle to brain cancer at 25-years-old.
As a way to continue his legacy, the Perkins family started an endowed scholarship to benefit Kent State University track & field athletes. The teamwork between Kent State athletics and the sports administration department helped the Perkins' family meet and surpass their goal just in time for what would have been Perkins' 36th birthday last month.   The scholarship will be awarded to a track & field athlete in the fall of 2016.
