Kent State enters the final week of the season with a chance to add a Mid-American Conference championship to its storied history and controls its own destiny in claiming at least a share of the MAC East title. The path to a title begins with a trip to East Division leader Bowling Green on Tuesday night in a game that will be televised on Time Warner Cable SportsChannel.
The Golden Flashes (19-10, 10-6) are just one game out of first place in the overall conference standings despite losing two straight. Bowling Green is one of three teams tied for the top spot and provides a tough matchup. Kent State has not won at Bowling Green since the Stroh Center opened, which is a span of three games. The Falcons defeated the Flashes, 66-64, in the conference opener back in January.
In addition to staying in the MAC title hunt, the Golden Flashes will also look to join just eight other Division I programs in the country to win at least 20 games in 15 of the past 17 seasons.
Kent State is led by redshirt sophomore forward Jimmy Hall, who totaled 18 points and 10 rebounds for his fifth double-double of the season Saturday vs. Buffalo. Hall is averaging 15.3 points and 7.3 rebounds per game while shooting 53-percent from the field. Guard Devareaux Manley is enjoying a breakout senior season. Manley, who began the year as the team's sixth man, has made a single-season record 94 three-pointers and is averaging 13.6 points per game. Seniors Kris Brewer (10.5) and Derek Jackson (9.5) join Manley to give the Flashes one of the top backcourts in the MAC.
Bowling Green (19-8, 11-5) has won two in a row to regain sole possession of first place in the MAC East. The Falcons are 10-4 at home this year, but have dropped two straight at the Stroh Center. Forward Richaun Holmes leads Bowling Green with 14.4 points, 8.0 rebounds and 2.7 blocks per game. Zack Denny (9.7 ppg), Jehvon Clarke (9.3 ppg), Spencer Parker (8.4 ppg) and Anthony Henderson (8.1 ppg) complement Holmes and provide the Falcons with a balanced lineup.
