CLEVELAND, Ohio - Kent State senior Emma Johnson has been named Mid-American Conference Female Scholar-Athlete of the Week, the conference office announced Wednesday (March 11).
The MAC Scholar-Athlete of the Week honor is presented to a student-athlete who has a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better and performs well during the week's competition. The winners are selected by a group of the conference's faculty athletic representatives.
Johnson earned her second straight MAC East Division Pitcher of the Week honor as she continued to dominate opposing batters at the UCF Knights Invitational over the weekend. She finished with a 2-1 record, 0.82 ERA and 36 strikeouts in three appearances. In her first start of the weekend, Johnson turned in perhaps the finest performance of her accomplished career with a two-hit shutout of No. 15 UCF in which 18 of the 21 outs she recorded were via strikeout. Less than 24 hours later, she threw a no-hitter against Michigan State, the second of her career, for her fourth consecutive shutout. Johnson had nine strikeouts against the Big Ten opponent. On Sunday, Johnson allowed two earned runs and had nine more strikeouts in a loss to Bradley.
The senior from Groveport, Ohio has been sensational during the opening month of the season as the ace of the Golden Flashes' pitching staff that has the nation's fourth-lowest ERA (0.90). Individually, Johnson is among the national leaders with 12.5 strikeouts per seven innings (2nd), 2.74 hits allowed per seven innings (4th), 4th shutouts (7th) and a 0.61 ERA (9th).
Kent State is off to an 11-4 start and will be challenged this weekend with a three-game series at No. 3 Michigan this coming weekend (March 14-15).
