CLEVELAND, Ohio - Kent State sophomore Maddy Grimm has been named Mid-American Conference East Division Player of the Week, the league office announced on Tuesday.
Grimm was the catalyst of a Golden Flashes offense that exploded for 30 runs over the final three games of the weekend. The slugger from Stahlstown, Pa. went 6-for-12 with four home runs, one double, eight RBIs and a 1.583 slugging percentage. Grimm, who was pitched around in two of the games, was also walked six times for a .667 on-base percentage and scored eight runs. She had two hits and three RBIs in a 12-2 Game 2 victory against Akron on Friday. On Saturday, Grimm went 3-for-3 with two homers and a double off the wall in center field against Ohio. She homered in her first plate appearance in Sunday's weekend finale against the Bobcats and was then walked in her final three plate appearances.
The MAC's leader in home runs, Grimm has slugged 12 homers and needs just one more of matching the Kent State single-season record that she tied during her freshman season a year ago. Grimm also leads the Flashes with a .390 batting average, seven doubles, 32 RBIs and .915 slugging percentage .
Kent State (26-9, 7-2 MAC) enters the week in a tie for first-place in the MAC standings and hosts Cleveland State for a doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon. The Golden Flashes will then head back on the road for four conference games against Central Michigan and Eastern Michigan this weekend.
