PITTSBURGH, Pa. - Kent State left nine runners on base in falling to Pittsburgh, 1-0, Wednesday. The second game of the scheduled doubleheader was canceled due to unplayable field conditions caused by rain.
The Golden Flashes (23-8) managed to outhit their host, 6-4, but were unable to produce any runs despite loading the bases in two separate innings. Juniors Michele Duffy and Shelbi Tilton collected two hits apiece to lead the Flashes.
Emma Johnson (12-4) had six strikeouts and allowed only one run in earning the loss. Johnson, who had won her previous six starts, surrendered a leadoff double in the bottom of the fourth inning. Following a stolen base, a single through the left side scored the only run of the game.
Kent State had threatened to score in the top of the fourth, as two walks and a single loaded the bases. Pittsburgh's Kayla Harris was able get a strikeout to end the inning.
Another scoring opportunity presented itself in the top of the fifth following back-to-back singles by Ronnie Ladines and Duffy. Dani Ramos made it three straight hits, but a nice throw to the plate beat the base runner for the first out of the inning. With first base open, the Panthers walked Maddy Grimm for the third time in as many plate appearances. A pop out and groundout ended the inning.
The Flashes return to action this weekend when they host Akron and Ohio at the Diamond at Dix.
