Flashes Drop 2-1 Game to Zips

AKRON, Ohio – Kent State (30-20, 17-9) fell on the wrong side of a pitchers' duel Friday night, dropping the second game in the series with Akron (25-27, 13-13) 2-1.
Eric Lauer put together another fantastic performance on the mound, going 6.0 innings with one run, two hits, two walks and six strikeouts.
The Zips scored first in the opening frame before Lauer settled in and cruised through the next five innings. The Golden Flashes tied the game in the 3rd when Reilly Hawkins reached on a bunt single and came home on a single up the middle by Zach Beckner.
The game remained in a deadlock until the 7th inning. With Dan Kopcak now on the mound, the leadoff runner reached on an error and two outs later, came home on a wild pitch. Kopcak suffered the loss while giving up one hit, one walk and striking out one in 0.2 innings.
Zach Willeman was sharp on the mound to finish out the game, throwing 1.1 innings with no hits, no walks and two strikeouts.
Kent State's five hits were spread throughout the order. Curtis Olvey had the only hit for extra bases, a double to lead off the 3rd inning.
The PNC Wagon Wheel Challenge point and seeding for the MAC Tournament will be on the line when the two teams meet in the rubber match on Saturday at 1 p.m. to close out the regular season.
