The Golden Flashes are coming off their first home and conference loss of the season, 76-67, to Buffalo on Friday night. Kent State erased a 12-point deficit to tie the game at 34-34 heading into the locker room at halftime, but were unable to comeback from another double-digit deficit in the second half. Xavier Pollard scored 21 points to lead Kent State to a 32-15 edge in bench scoring. Jimmy Hall finished with 10 points and a team-high seven rebounds. The Flashes shot just 40.3-percent shooting from the field (25-for-62) and 14 percent from 3-point range (2-for-14), while allowing the Bulls to shoot 24-for-46 (52.2%) overall and 8-for-17 from the three-point arc (47.1%). Kent State did an excellent job of forcing 20 turnovers, but only managed 14 points off of those turnovers.
The frontcourt of Jimmy Hall (15.1 ppg, 6.7 rpg), Khaliq Spicer (6.9 ppg, 5.8 rpg) and Chris Ortiz (8.1 ppg, 5.5 rpg) has helped Kent State control play around the basket. Jaylin Walker (7.6 ppg) eclipsed the 100-point mark vs. Buffalo t become the first Kent State freshman to hit the century mark since Eric Gaines during the 2010-11 season. In the Flashes' game against #18 SMU on December 22, Walker turned in the first 20-point performance by a freshman since all-time leading scorer Trevor Huffman dropped 21 against Miami on January 20, 1999. Deon Edwin has played terrific since being inserted into the starting lineup, averaging 8.8 points, 5.5 rebounds and 2.5 steals over the last three games.
