ESTERO, Fla. – Larissa Lurken reached the 1,000 career point milestone as Kent State (2-3) opened the Gulf Coast Showcase with a 84-42 loss to No. 5/6 Baylor (5-1) Friday afternoon.
Less than two minutes into the game tied 2-2, Lurken squared up from the left side of the arc and drained a three for her 998th, 99th and 1,000th career points. She is the 20th Golden Flash in program history to earn the achievement and first since 2011.
That three gave Kent State a 5-2 lead before Baylor was able to go on a 15-0 run. Naddiyah Cross put a stop to that with a three just before the horn marking the end of the first quarter. The Bears led 17-8.
In the second quarter, Baylor shot 68.4% from the floor to improve its lead. Megan Carter threw up an off-balance three that counted at the buzzer to put the game at 47-23 at the half.
Kent State scored first out of the break as Lurken connected on a three from the corner. However, both teams scored 13 points in the ten-minute span as Baylor was able to maintain a 24 point lead at the end of the 3rd.
The Flashes struggled shooting in the final quarter, going just 0-for-6 leading up to the media break while the Bears sank seven of their ten in that same span. Baylor was able to extend their lead over the final five minutes to take the 84-42 victory.
The Bears made more than half their shots in the game and outrebounded the Flashes 49-23 in the contest. Lurken led Kent State in scoring with 15 while adding in a team-high two steals. Cross led the team with four assists. Lacey Miller recorded her first career points as she saw late action in the game.
The Golden Flashes will now play the loser of No. 17/18 DePaul and Western Kentucky. That game will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday at Germain Arena.
