Kent State's streak of 12 consecutive victories over Buffalo came to an end Sunday at Alumni Arena. The Bulls took six matches in a 23-12 win, putting the dual out of reach with a victory at 197.
In their Mid-American Conference opener, the Golden Flashes won three of the final four matches, including Devin Nye's 6-4 decision over Jake Gunning. Nye handed Gunning, his first loss of the season. Gunning, who was ranked No. 1 in the MAC, scored the opening takedown, before Nye fought off a cradle attempt and later took control of the match.
Junior Jerald Spohn gave Kent State its most convincing win of the day, an 8-1 decision over Brett Perry at 184.
Spohn's win came on the heels of a Jairod James victory at 174. The sophomore topped Muhamed McBryde 3-2.
Junior Chance Driscoll got the Flashes on the board with a 4-3 victory at 141. Driscoll put together an impressive second period that started with a reversal and continued with shot for a takedown.
Sophomore Anthony Tutolo (133) and Isaac Bast (165) were each within striking distance late in their matches, but were unable to come up with third period heroics.
The Golden Flashes host a pair of home duals at the Kent State Field House this coming weekend. On Friday, Gardner-Webb comes to Kent, Ohio for the first time in 14 years, while Chattanooga comes back to Northeast Ohio for the first time in 26 years on Sunday.
