Gardner-Webb Slips Past Flashes 22-17

Behind close wins at 157, 184 and heavyweight, Gardner-Webb edged Kent State 22-17 Friday night in the program's first dual at the Kent State Field House. The Golden Flashes won the first three matches, before dropping five straight.
Hometown freshman Cory Simpson hit a six-point move on the edge of the mat in the first period, sparking a 14-6 major decision.
"Cory wrestled really well today," Head Coach Jim Andrassy said. "He fought hard."
Sophomore Anthony Tutolo followed with five takedowns in a 13-5 major decision over Philip Anderson at 133.
"I think Anthony's better than what he showed tonight," Andrassy said despite the major decision.
Junior Chance Driscoll extended the Flashes team lead to 11-0 with a 7-5 decision over Ryan Hull. With the match tied 4-4 to start to the third Driscoll escaped and slowly worked his way to a key takedown.
"Chance wins a lot of the little position battles," Andrassy said.
Two stalling points made the difference in Ryan Mosley's 3-1 win over Casey Sparkman at 157.
A stalling point and riding time proved to be crucial in Hunter Gamble's 4-3 decision over Shane Mast at 184.
The Flashes trailed 19-11 with two matches remaining and needed bonus points. Junior Stephen Suglio delivered with a first period pin of Drew Barrett. Suglio led 10-0 before turning Barrett on his back for the third and final time.
Sophomore Devin Nye gave Boyce Cornwell all he could handle at heavyweight, but came short in a 5-3 loss.
Kent State heads back to the Field House Sunday, hosting Chattanooga at noon.
