Flashes Have Good Showing on Day One of Golden Flashes Gala

KENT, Ohio- Several Golden Flashes turned in good performances, including three event victories, on Friday at the Golden Flashes Gala at the Kent State Field House.
All three events winners were on the women's side, with Chelsea Laury winning the pentathlon, Cayla Carey winning the long jump and Sam Tollerud winning the pole vault.
Laury set a personal-record with 5,545 points in the pentathlon. Laury's best event of the day was the high jump as she posted a personal-record mark of 1.64m (5' 4.5").
Carey's top mark in the long jump was 5.62m (18' 5.25"), which gave her the victory over several Mid-American Conference competitors.Â
Tollerud captured the pole vault title at a height of 4.1m (13' 5.25"), followed by Morgan Estes in second place (3.85m, 12' 7.5"), Ally Thompson in third (3.7m, 12' 1.5") and Maria Horrigan in fifth (3.7m 12' 1.5").
Kent State's three competitors in the men's heptathlon turned in solid performances on the first day of competition, led by TJ Lawson's 3,168 points. Lawson took first in the high jump (2.01m, 6' 7"), shot put (13.12m, 43' 0.5") and long jump (7.25m 23' 9.5"), all of which were personal-records. In second place after day one of the heptathlon is Ryan Looser with 2,876 points. Looser took second in the long jump with a personal-best mark of 6.96m (22' 10"). Freshman Mitchell Kubicki took fourth in the heptathlon 60m dash with a time of 7.29 and is in 6th place overall with 2,567 points.
Also, competing on the men's side was Trevor Detillion and Christian Smith in the weight throw. Smith finished eighth with a heave of 18.66m (61' 2.75"), while Detillion finshed 16th at 16.55m (54' 3.75").
The Golden Flashes had three runners in the women's 5,000m. In fourth place was Rachel Slingluff with a time of 18:25.46, followed by Morgan Bing in sixth (18:29.46) and Angelica Lucas in 16th (20:17.31).Â
Action from the Kent State Field House resumes Saturday, Dec. 10 at 11 a.m. with the heptathlon 60m hurdles and the men's high jump. Â
