Flashes Shutout Highlanders in Series Opener

RADFORD, Va. – Kent State (8-3) posted a 6-0 shutout to take the series opener at Radford (2-12) on Friday.
The Golden Flashes broke through with a run in the 2nd on a bases loaded walk to Mason Mamarella on a full count. Runners reached earlier in the inning on a Conner Simonetti single, Dom Iero walk and Tim DalPorto single.
The lead opened up in the in the 5th when Alex Miklos had base hit and Zarley Zalewski followed with a walk. Dylan Rosa then had the big blast, with a three-run shot to left to make it a 4-0 game.
Zalewski and Iero put together base hits in the 7th to plate another run. Tim DalPorto also went yard, a solo shot to leadoff the 8th, to push Kent State's lead to 6-0.
Eric Lauer had yet another strong start, going 7.0 innings with five hits, one walk and six strikeouts for the victory. The bullpen also was impressive as Tim Faix went 1.1 innings in relief with no hits, no walks and two strikeouts. Eli Martin finished out the game with one hit and struck out both batters for his two outs.
The team combined for ten hits, including three in four at-bats for Zalewski. DalPorto also had a multi-hit day, going 2-for-4. Rosa led with three RBI.
Kent State and Radford will meet again on Saturday in a 2 p.m. game.
