UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Kent State (31-10) beat Penn State (24-18) 6-2 Wednesday night behind a brilliant start from freshman Joey Murray to hand him his first collegiate victory.
Murray went 7.0 innings on the mound with just four hits and one walk while striking out nine. He ended six of his seven frames with a strikeout in the contest.
In the 3rd, the Golden Flashes broke through when Luke Burch led off with a single, stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch. He scored easily during the next at-bat on a base hit by Mason Mamarella. After Mamarella swiped a bag, he came in later on a sacrifice fly by Dylan Rosa to give the team a 2-0 advantage.
They tacked on three more in the 5th. Reilly Hawkins walked, Burch singled and Mamarella moved them both over on a sacrifice bunt. After Zarley Zalewski walked to load the bases, Rosa hit a two-RBI single. An error later in the inning with Schuler at the plate allowed the third run of the frame to score.
The sixth run of the game came in the same inning as Burch reached on an error and was brought home again by a Mamarella hit.
A trio of base hits allowed the Nittany Lions to break the shutout in the 8th as they scored two, but they would not come any closer to the lead.
Eli Martin threw 0.2 innings before Tim Faix finished the final 1.1 frames with no hits and one walk.
Burch was 3-for-5 out of the leadoff spot with three runs scored and Rosa went 3-for-4 with a team-high three RBI. Mamarella finished 2-for-3 with two RBI and one run.
Kent State will return home this weekend for a big conference series against Miami, starting with a 3:00 p.m. game on Friday.
