KENT, Ohio – Another complete game effort from the Flashes helped Kent State (32-10, 13-3) notch another mark in the win column as they took down Miami (20-21, 9-4) in the series opener 10-3.
It didn't take long for the Golden Flashes to post some runs on the board. In the 1st, Luke Burch led off with a single, was moved on a sacrifice bunt by Mason Mamarella and scored on a base hit by Zarley Zalewski. After Dylan Rosa reached base on a fielder's choice, Conner Simonetti smacked a no-doubt homerun out to right field for a 3-0 lead.
After the RedHawks scored an unearned run on a homer in the 2nd, Kent State posted a big five-run 3rd inning. Burch led things off again with a single as Mamarella and Zalewski followed with a single each to load the bases. Rosa then also grabbed an infield base hit to score one. With bases still loaded, Simonetti hit the team's fifth-straight base hit and then advanced as another run came home on a throwing error. A Dom Iero two-run double later on accounted for the 7th and 8th KSU runs of the game.
The Golden Flashes rounded out their scoring with a run in the 4th on a Mamarella double, Zalewski single and Rosa sacrifice fly, and tacked on one in the 6th on an error and Pete Schuler base hit.
Miami's other two runs came in the 6th on a single and homerun, marking the first time Eric Lauer has given up more than one earned run in a game since his season-opener against Virginia.
Nonetheless, Lauer's season ERA remains under 1.00 as he earned his eighth win of the season. He went 7.1 innings in the start with two earned runs, four hits, two walks and ten strikeouts. Aaron Tadian came on in relief to face four batters, allowing one hit while striking out two. Patrick Dayton finished the final frame and ended the game on strikeout.
Burch, Mamarella and Zalewski all picked up three hits in the contest out of the first three spots in the batting order. Simonetti had two hits with a team-high three RBI.
The two teams meet again on Saturday in a 2 p.m. start.
