KENT, Ohio – Kent State (20-8) earned the title of "Ohio's team" Tuesday night as they beat Ohio State (19-8-1) 8-3 in the Buckeyes' first trip to Kent since 1989.
Ohio State had won 16-straight midweek games dating back to last season, but that streak was squashed as Kent State jumped on them early and often for the victory.
Kent State collected 13 hits, making it six games in a row they have had ten hits or more and nine times in their last ten games. It is the second game in a row that every starter had at least one hit.
The Golden Flashes led 7-0 through the first three frames. They started the scoring with one run in the 1st when Luke Burch led off with a double and scored on a base hit by Dylan Rosa. Two more came in in the 2nd inning as walks by Conner Simonetti and Sam Hurt were followed by a infield bunt single by Mason Mamarella to load the bases with no outs. A Burch sacrifice fly gave him another RBI. Hurt then scampered home on an errant throw on a failed pickoff attempt.
The biggest damage came in the 3rd inning when the Flashes plated four runs. The inning started when Pete Schuler ripped the first pitch to right center for a double. Simonetti then switched places with him on another double. Hurt followed with an RBI single. After Burch singled and Zach Beckner loaded the bases later in the inning, Zarley Zalewski singled two home on a base knock.
Kent State's eighth run came in the 8th inning when Zalewski walked, moved on a wild pitch and scored on another double from the bat of Schuler.
The Flashes nearly handed the Buckeyes their first shutout of the season, but three runs in the 9th eliminated that.
Connor Wollersheim had another strong start on the mound as he went 5.2 shutout innings with just three hits and one walk while striking out four. Chris Martin followed and struck out the first three batters he faced and did not allow a run in 1.1 innings. Tim Faix followed with an inning of relief before Zach Spangler threw the final three outs.
Burch contributed with three hits, two runs and a RBI. Schuler and Simonetti both finished with two hits on the day.
Kent State will take on Canisius in a 3 p.m. game at Schoonover Stadium on Wednesday.
