KENT, Ohio โ It was a tale of two matches for the Kent State volleyball team, which split its matches in the Golden Flashes Classic at the M.A.C. Center on Friday. The Golden Flashes made quick work of Wright State in a 3-0 victory (25-21, 25-16, 25-21) and then were swept by Boise State, 3-0 (25-19, 25-17, 25-20) in the championship match.
Kent State (3-2) put on a defensive clinic in holding Wright State to a .000 hitting percentage in its opening match but then surrendered a .320 hitting percentage to Boise State's high-powered attack in the finale.
"We were happy with our performance against Wright State in the first match of the day," said head coach Don Gromala. "We did a really good job of executing our game plan and working through some things at the beginning of the match. It was a much tougher match tonight. Boise State came and put a lot of pressure on us with their net play. We made some great adjustments and were right with them late into the third set but just couldn't pull it off. Going forward, we have to stay mentally and physically tougher longer into those dogfights."
Juniors Kelsey Bittinger and Challen Geraghty were named to the all-tournament team. Bittinger continued her stellar play at the pin with 27 kills for an average of 4.50 kills per set with a .278 hitting percentage. She added 17 digs (2.83 per set). Geraghty tallied 41 digs (6.83 per set) over the two matches.
Kent State is back in action Saturday evening at 6 p.m. to host Tennessee out of the SEC.
