TOLEDO, Ohio- Jenna Hellstrom scored two free kick goals to give Kent State soccer a 2-1 win over Toledo Friday night, the first Mid-American Conference matchup of the season. The Golden Flashes earned their fifth consecutive win and move to 5-1-0 (1-0 MAC) on the year, and the Rockets drop to 5-4-0 (0-1-0).
The Rockets would score the first goal of the game in the 33rd minute as Brooke Maletic played the ball into the box to Isa Echeverri who headed it into the Kent State net.
The Golden Flashes would get the goal back quickly, scoring less than two minutes later. After Abbie Lawson was taken down outside the Toledo box on a foul that warranted a yellow card, Hellstrom lined up the free kick and slotted it home for her sixth goal of the year.
The Golden Flashes would threaten a couple more times in the first half but Toledo keeper Katie Wilson came up the save on shots by Paige Culver and Donavan Capehart.
Kent State's defense put in another valiant effort holding the Rockets to just one shot on goal following the Rocket's first half goal. Keeper Ashleah McDonald registered two saves on three shots on goal by the Rockets.
The 1-1 draw would last until the 82nd minute when the Flashes were awarded another free kick outside the Toledo box. Once again Hellstrom stepped up to take the shot and again put it in the Toledo net.
Hellstrom now has 30 career goals, putting her in a tie for second all-time with Kimberly Dimitrioff.
Kent State would preserve the 2-1 lead for the remaining eight minutes for its fourth consecutive win ending in a score of 2-1 and their fifth consecutive win overall.
In total, the Golden Flashes outnumbered the Rockets in shots (15-8), shots on goal (11-3), and corner kicks (4-2).
The Golden Flashes will stay in northwest Ohio this weekend as they take on Bowling Green on Sunday at 1 p.m.
