
Gymnastics Hosts WMU Friday to Start MAC Schedule

Preseason Mid-American Conference favorite Kent State opens conference competition against Western Michigan at 7 p.m. Friday inside of the M.A.C. Center.
The Golden Flashes scored a 192.975 in their season-opening quad meet at Ohio State on Saturday, while the Broncos posted a 192.900 in a dual loss to Central Michigan to drop to 0-2 in the MAC standings.
LAST TIME OUT
Kent State placed fourth in a quad meet at St. John Arena with a team score of 192.975 to finish behind #11 Michigan, #22 Ohio State and Washington on Jan. 14. Junior Rachel Stypinski placed in the top two in three events as she captured the first individual all-around title of her collegiate career by scoring an impressive 39.400 in her first regular season all-around competition as a collegian to best Washington's Hailey Burleson by 0.200 points. Stypinski also won the individual bars title with a 9.875 and took second on floor (9.925) and beam (9.875).
The Golden Flashes placed four gymnasts in the top 10 on floor and earned a team score of 48.975, which was second among competing teams and good for a No. 12 national ranking. In addition to Stypinski, a trio of seniors delivered good routines for the Flashes. Jordan Hardison and Samantha Gordon both scored a 9.825 to tie for fifth, while Skyelee Lamano earned a 10th-place finish with a 9.800.
Junior Brooke Timko hit a strong bars routine and scored a 9.825 to tie for third. Sophomore Dara Williams led Kent State on vault, tying for 11th with a 9.750.Â
SCOUTING WESTERN MICHIGAN
The Broncos were picked to finish sixth out of seven teams in the conference's pre-season poll and enter with a 1-3 record through the first two weekends of competition.
Western Michigan's 193.075 average ranks fifth in the conference. Beam has been a strength early on with an average score of 48.263 that ranks second among MAC teams.
Rachael Underwood is the Broncos' top all-around performer with an average of 38.550. Underwood also leads the way on beam (9.763) and floor (9.720). Anna Corbett has won both vault competitions this season and ranks third in the MAC with a 9.787 average.
SERIES HISTORY
Kent State is 56-20 all-time vs. Western Michigan. The Golden Flashes have come out on top in six consecutive matchups and own an 18-2 record over the past decade. The last time the Broncos earned a victory in the series at the M.A.C. Center was January 25, 1991 during the final season under Kent State coaching legends Rudy and Janet Bachna.

Kent State goes back on the road for a tri-meet at Northern Illinois on Sunday, Jan. 29 to compete against the Huskies and Southeast Missouri State.
