CLEVELAND, Ohio – Junior Rachel Stypinski has been named Mid-American Conference Gymnast of the Week, the league office announced Tuesday afternoon. The 2016 MAC Gymnast of the Year has received the honor following both of the Golden Flashes' competition weekends this season.
Stypinski accomplished a rare feat during Kent State's first conference meet against Western Michigan on Friday at the M.A.C. Center, as she captured all five individual event titles. Her 39.525 all-around score matched Jessie James (March 14, 2004) for the fourth-best performance in program history. She also achieved a new personal-best on vault (9.825) and matched her previous high score on bars (9.900). Stypinski scored a 9.875 on beam and 9.925 on floor from the anchor position of both events.
Through the first three weekends of the season, Stypinski ranks first in the conference in all-around, bars, beam and floor while also ranking in the Top 15 nationally in each event.
Kent State will compete in its first road MAC meet when it visits Northern Illinois this weekend for a tri-meet that also includes Southeast Missouri.
