Willeman Wows as Flashes Record Another Shutout

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Kent State (2-0) posted another shutout to start the season as they beat Belmont (0-2) 3-0 behind a fine performance from Zach Willeman in his first career start.
The junior struck out ten in 5.1 innings, including five of the first six Bruins batters of the game, to set the pace for the victory. He gave up just three hits and walked two batters to get the win.
Run support came in the 5th when Mason Mamarella smacked a two-out triple and scored when Luke Burch doubled to center. Two more runs were tacked on in the final inning. Dom Iero and Brad Hamilton hit back-to-back doubles to make it a 2-0 game. Hamilton scored the final run later on a Tim DalPorto base hit.
Kent State belted out 11 hits in the game and gave up just four while playing errorless baseball on the day.
Connor Wollersheim followed Willeman on the mound and threw 2.2 innings with one hit and two strikeouts. Zach Spangler pitched the final inning to pick up the save while walking one and striking out two.
Burch, DalPorto and Reilly Hawkins all grabbed two hits in the game. Hawkins also had an extra-base hit with a double in the 9th.
The final matchup of the series will begin at 2 p.m. EST on Sunday.
