Kent State will be one of four teams in the top 25 competing in a large and loaded field. Joining the 22nd ranked Golden Flashes are: No. 3 Illinois, hosts Louisiana, Louisiana Tech, No. 14 LSU, Sam Houston State, Southeastern Louisiana, Southern Illinois, Southern Mississippi, No. 13 Texas A&M, Texas State, Toledo, UMKC, UTSA and UT Arlington.
The Flashes begin the spring season coming off a record-breaking fall. The program returned an experienced unit that had won the 2016 Mid-American Conference Championship. The veteran squad would finish in the top-five of every tournament, including a victory at the Cleveland State Invitational. There the Flashes surpassed the program record for a 54 hole tournament by seven strokes.
Kent State's roster is not just experienced, but deep in talent. The Flashes go five deep in the individual national rankings, led by Ian Holt, who currently sits at 59th in the nation. Holt won the individual title at the Cleveland State Invitational this fall and had a blistering run of nine straight rounds of 70 or lower.
Holt's fellow upperclassmen in the lineup, Josh Whalen and Chase Johnson, are also top-250 ranked golfers. Whalen's fall was highlighted by a career-best 67 at the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate, while Johnson is coming off a marquee 2016 in which he earned MAC Golfer of the Year honors.
The lineup is rounded out by a pair of nationally ranked sophomores in Gisli Sveinbergsson and Bjarki Petursson. Sveinbergsson was a mark of consistency in the fall, placing in the top-30 of every tournament. Petursson made an equally impressive mark on the fall, winning the individual tournament at the Gopher Invitational.
Outside of the team's nationally ranked lineup, head coach Herb Page can pull from a deep pool of golfers. Page displayed his team's depth at the Cleveland State Invitational, where he fielded enough individuals to compete as a separate team. Among that group, freshman Chris Doody and junior Spencer Dobbs both finished in the top-6. Doody will be competing in Louisiana as an individual.
The Flashes will compete in six tournaments this spring before defending its MAC Championship in Nashport, Ohio from April 28-30. The NCAA postseason schedule is slated to begin May 15.
