Kent State sophomore Casey Sparkman and junior Stephen Suglio each earned victories against No. 1 Oklahoma State Saturday afternoon at the M.A.C. Center. The Cowboys (12-0) came away with a 36-6 victory during the Golden Flashes' Beauty and the Beast event as gymnastics took on West Virginia.
"They're a great team," Head Coach Jim Andrassy said of Oklahoma State. "They're always trying to score points throughout the match and they rarely give up points at the end of a period."
Sparkman and Davey Dolan were tied 2-2 after the second period, before Sparkman rattled off four takedowns in the third for an 11-5 victory.
"Casey wrestled a great match," Andrassy said. "He kept looking to score points and it paid off for him in the third period."
Suglio trailed 1-0 after two periods on the way to a 4-2 decision over Derek White. Suglio quickly escaped to start the third and was awarded a point for White backing out of the circle. A Suglio shot then led to a scramble, where he displayed balance and flexibility getting behind White at the edge of the mat for a crucial takedown.
"Stephen's had a really good streak of matches," Andrassy said. "I'm really happy with him. Hopefully he can continue to progress. I think he's got the ability to get to the NCAA tournament."
The Golden Flashes will host Eastern Michigan Sunday, in their final home dual meet of the season. Action begins at noon inside the M.A.C. Center.
