From the opening match to the final bout, Eastern Michigan found ways to win the close ones as the Eagles topped Kent State 27-12 Sunday afternoon at the M.A.C. Center. The Golden Flashes' three victories came from sophomores Anthony Tutolo and Casey Sparkman and junior Stephen Suglio.
"We had matches at 165, 184 and heavyweight that we could have won," Head Coach Jim Andrassy said. "If this happens in a different year when we're winning as a team… winning becomes contagious. In other seasons, we've been the ones to win those matches."
The most pivotal win of the day for Eastern Michigan came during the second match at 184. Tied 3-3 in sudden victory, Kayne MacCallum took Jerald Spohn down to his back for a pin to give the Eagles a 9-0 lead.
Suglio followed with a dominant 8-1 victory over Derek Hillman at 197.
The next back-and-forth battle came at heavyweight. Sophomore Devin Nye led Gage Hutchison 2-1 after two periods behind a reversal in the second. Tied 2-2 in the third, Nye shot in on a leg, but could not hang on as Hutchison spun around for the pivotal takedown in a 6-3 decision.
Freshman Cory Simpson scored an opening takedown against Noah Gonser at 125, but was pinned in the second period.
Tutolo made his return at 133, tallying a pair of takedowns in a strong first period.
"It was good to see Anthony get a win under his belt," Andrassy said of Tutolo's first match in over three weeks. "Sometimes you just need that one match to get back to form."
Junior Chance Driscoll trailed Kyle Springer 9-4 in the third period, before putting together a late rally. Driscoll escaped and grabbed a pair of takedowns to the narrow the deficit to 10-9, before Springer claimed the final takedown.
Redshirt freshman Tim Rooney was tied 2-2 after two periods with Nick Barber, before dropping a 6-3 decision.
Sparkman followed at 157 with a powerful double leg shot that put Zac Carson directly on his back. Just a few seconds later, Sparkman settled in for a pin in the first period.
Redshirt freshman Jared Walker earned an opening takedown against Devan Marry and scored a reversal in the second, but a four-point turn by Marry in the first had Walker playing catch-up for most of the match.
The Golden Flashes head to Mount Pleasant next Sunday for a Mid-American Conference showdown with Central Michigan.
