CHARLESTON, S.C. – Joey Murray only allowed three base runners and collected nine strikeouts in 5.0 innings for his first win of the season as Kent State (9-5) shutout College of Charleston (8-8) 5-0 to take the series.
"I like the way we responded from last weekend and played good baseball this weekend, especially today," said Head Coach Jeff Duncan. "It was good to see Joey Murray have the start we were looking for. He has tremendous potential. Offensively and defensively we were good all weekend."
The Golden Flashes once again struck early to get out to a 1st-inning lead. They scored two to start the game when Mason Mamarella singled, stole a bag and came home on a Pete Schuler double. Schuler then scored on a base hit by Tim DalPorto.
It remained a 2-0 game until Reilly Hawkins led off the 7th inning with a solo homerun to right field. Burch singled later on and scored on a double from Dylan Rosa to put the score at 4-0.
The final run of the day came in the 8th when Dom Iero doubled, stole third and scored on a Hawkins base hit.
Murray earned his first win of the season as he went 5.0 innings in the start with two hits, two walks and nine strikeouts. Jared Skolnicki was just as good in 3.0 innings of relief with one hit and two strikeouts. Zach Spangler pitched the 9th. He gave up a base hit to the first batter before striking out the next three to end the game.
"Our bullpen was great all weekend," added Duncan. "Austin Havekost was great in relief for Eli Kraus on Friday night. Patrick Dayton and Connor Wollersheim looked good Saturday, and Skonicki and Spangler followed up Murray very nicely today."
Burch and Mamarella both went 3-for-5 at the top of the order while Reilly Hawkins joined them with three hits in four at-bats. Iero finished 2-for-4.
"Burch and Mamarella sparked our lineup this weekend, and when they get on base it causes havoc," said Duncan. "Schuler was great all weekend as well."
The team's regularly scheduled home openers on Tuesday, March 14 and Wednesday, March 15 have been canceled, so the next games for the Flashes will be at Western Carolina March 17-19 for a three-game series.
