KENT, Ohio – The No. 7 Kent State men's golf team will compete against one of the toughest fields in the nation this weekend in the Aggie Invitational at the Traditions Club in Bryan Texas.
The tournament begins with 36 holes on Saturday and concludes with a final round on Sunday. Action on both days will begin at 7:30 a.m. CST.
The tournament field is made up of 13 teams, all but two of which are top 100 squads. Kent State will put its top-10 ranking to the test against: Arkansas, No. 4 Baylor, No. 8 LSU, Michigan, New Mexico State, North Carolina, North Texas, No. 2 Oklahoma State, No. 18 Texas, No. 16 Texas A&M, No. 13 Texas Tech and UTSA.
Currently, the Golden Flashes are playing as well as anyone in the country. The team has won two of the last three tournaments, along with a second place finish in Myrtle Beach. That result came in a weather-shortened tournament in which the Flashes were in contention.
In the most recent victory at the Seahawk Invitational, the Flashes finished 7-under par at 857 (291-281-285). The team's third-round score was by far the best in the field, growing the team's margin of victory to 47 strokes. Second-place Army came in at 40-over par. The mark broke the tournament record that has been held since 2012 by East Carolina.
Senior Josh Whalen earned his first career victory, finishing at 9-under par. He shot a 66 in round two through rough conditions, a round head coach Herb Page called as good a performance he could have had. Gisli Sveinbergsson finished in second place, while fellow sophomore Bjarki Petursson was tied for ninth.
This weekend's tournament could feature a breakout performance from anyone in the lineup. All five Flashes in the lineup are currently ranked in the top-185 in the nation. The group is led by Ian Holt at 21st in all of NCAA, putting together one of the top seasons in program history.
