BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – In a non-conference, midweek contest Tuesday afternoon, Kent State (17-11) fell to Bowling Green (9-19) by a score of 9-3.
"One of our goals is to hold teams to five or less runs. I think the last four out of the last five games we've have five in an inning," said Head Coach Jeff Duncan. We've let other teams have big innings and that's really hard. I think the effort was there. We are in the middle of our season right now and I think these games in the past week and a half will make us appreciate winning baseball much more."
The Falcons started the game with a leadoff homerun and then posted a five-run 2nd inning that the Flashes could not overcome.
Down 6-0 in the 4th, Kent State broke through with a run on singles by Mason Mamarella, Dylan Rosa and Reilly Hawkins. However, Bowling Green responded in the bottom of the frame with two runs to make it an 8-1 game.
The Golden Flashes plated a run again in the 5th when John Matthews reached on a fielder's choice, Nick Kanavas singled and Dom Iero doubled in a run. Another runner came in to score in the 7th as Kanavas had another base hit and scored later on a RBI single by Tim DalPorto.
The Falcons would score their final run in the 6th to put the game at a 9-3 final.
Connor Wollersheim suffered the loss as the starting pitcher with Austin Havekost and Jared Skolnicki following him out of the bullpen. Zach Willeman pitched a strong inning with no hits and two strikeouts while Robert Zeigler finished the game on the mound with one hit, one walk and one strikeout.
Kanavas went 3-for-4 with a walk out of the leadoff spot for the best offensive performance from the Flashes. The team's other six hits were scattered throughout the order.
Kent State returns to conference play this weekend with a three-game series at Northern Illinois. Game times are scheduled for 4 p.m. EST on Friday and 2 p.m. EST on Saturday and Sunday.
"We are 5-1 in the league right now and have an opportunity to go in to DeKalb this weekend and get back on our winning ways," added Duncan.
