PITTSBURGH, Pa. – Five doubles in a five-run 4th inning handed Kent State (21-12) a 12-8 victory at Pittsburgh (16-18) on Wednesday night.
The big frame was a comeback inning as the Flashes started hot but had to dig out of a one-run deficit.
The game began with Mason Mamarella getting hit by a pitch on a full count then back-to-back singles by Luke Burch and Dylan Rosa to make it 2-0. Tim DalPorto then kept the momentum going with the third base hit in a row to score another.
The lead grew to 4-0 in the 2nd as John Matthews doubled and advanced home after two groundouts.
The game became tied in the bottom of the 2nd and the Panthers went ahead on an unearned run in the 3rd.
That lead did not last long as the barrage of two-baggers would put the Flashes in front for good. Hurt was hit by a pitch and advanced to third on a double by Nick Kanavas. Matthews scored them both on a double. Mamarella switched places with Matthews with a double to center field. Rosa followed with a double down the left field line. The fifth and final run of the frame came when pinch-hitter Dom Iero joined the double club to score Rosa and making it a 9-5 ballgame.
Pittsburgh got one run back in the 5th but Kent State had another big inning in store. The 6th inning started with a walk to Burch before Rosa blasted a high shot over the wall in left center. After singling later on, Reilly Hawkins scored on a base hit by Kanavas.
A two-run homerun by the Panthers would come in the 8th but they would get no closer as the Flashes would win 12-8.
Jared Skolnicki went 1.2 innings in the start and gave way to Austin Havekost who would get the win with no hits and one unearned run in 2.1 innings pitched. Robert Zeigler followed and filled in two innings before Patrick Dayton and Zach Spangler both threw well to finish out the game.
Mamarella, Rosa and Kanavas all had a three-hit night while Matthews had two. Eight of the team's twelve hits were for extra bases.
Kent State returns home to host its longest homestand of the season this Friday when it starts a three-game conference series with Toledo.
