KENT, Ohio – Josh Hollander's 7th inning double would be the difference maker Tuesday night as five Kent State (25-12) hurlers combined for a 3-0 shutout win over Bowling Green (10-26).
Joe Vranesic gave up five hits and two walks but struck out six in 3.2 innings as the night's starter. The Falcons would then only muster one hit, one walk and strikeout 11 times in the remaining frames as the Flashes' bullpen dominated. Zach Schultz sat down three in 2.1 innings without giving up a hit. Austin Havekost would get the win as he got five of his six outs via the strikeout. Zach Spangler struck out two to start off the 9th before Patrick Dayton came in and struck out the only batter he faced for the save.
The game went scoreless through six until, with two outs in the 7th, Nick Kanavas walked on a full count and Hollander slapped a double to right center to start the scoring.
Two more runs were added for insurance in the 8th. Mason Mamarella bunted on a single and Luke Burch reached on a fielder's choice to put one on with one out. Dylan Rosa then blasted a ball off the left field wall for a RBI double. Tim DalPorto singled in the next at-bat to score Rosa and make it a 3-0 game.
Mamarella had two hits in the leadoff spot while Kent State's other six hits were scattered throughout the order.
The Flashes will host Central Michigan this weekend in a showdown of the two top teams in the conference, as both sit at 10-2. The first game is set for 3 p.m. on Friday.
