Errors Harm Flashes in 5-3 MAC Tournament Loss

AVON, Ohio – Four errors and 13 runners left on base by the Golden Flashes (36-17) resulted in a 5-3 loss to the Ohio Bobcats (29-26) late Thursday night in the second day of Mid-American Conference Tournament action.

No. 1 Kent State will now play No. 8 Toledo on Friday at 4:30 p.m.

In his second straight start, 2017 MAC Pitcher of the Year Joey Murray did not give up an earned run, as he went 6.2 innings with two hits, two unearned runs, two walks and eight strikeouts.

In the back-and-forth contest, the Golden Flashes struck first with a run in the second. Dom Iero started off the bottom of the inning with a double and scored later on off a base hit by Josh Hollander.

The Bobcats were able to answer and tie the game in the third when an unearned run came home after a hit batter and two errors in the frame.

Kent State would get back in front by a run in the fourth. Reilly Hawkins singled, John Matthews was hit and Josh Hollander was walked to load the bases. A groundout, fielder's choice would make it a 2-1 game.

It became tied in the seventh as the Bobcats scored another earned run after the inning started with a throwing error. They would go on to score two in the eighth to take the lead when a double, walk and another error helped their cause.

Ohio tacked on another in the ninth to make it a 5-2 game. Kent State attempted a rally in the bottom of the final frame, but fell short. The Golden Flashes were only able to score one on a Luke Burch single and Pete Schuler pinch-hit double, but could come no closer.

Patrick Dayton followed Murray out of the bullpen and gave up one earned run on one hit with one walk and one strikeout in 1.1 innings. Zach Spangler threw the final frame with two hits and one run.

Both teams were only able to pick up five hits on the night. The Flashes' five were spread throughout the order. Doubles by Iero and Schuler were the only hits for extra bases for Kent State.
