
Volleyball Loses MAC Opener

AKRON, Ohio –Kent State struck first in Friday night's Mid-American Conference opener at James A. Rhodes Arena but ultimately fell to rival Akron, 3-1 (27-25, 15-25, 18-25, 23-25). The match was the first contest of the 2017-18 Crystal Clinic Wagon Wheel Challenge between the two school athletics departments.
The Golden Flashes (2-10, 0-1 MAC) held a 54-48 advantage in digs and had just one fewer kill than the Zips. However, Akron posted its season-best mark for aces (14) and blocks (13) to score valuable points.
Senior Kelsey Bittinger had a match-high 17 kills while hitting .317 and added eight digs. Senior Heather Younkin added eight kills.
Senior Challen Geraghty, led all players with 18 digs. Freshman Natalie Tagala led the Flashes with 34 assists to go with 11 digs for her third straight double-double.
Kent State completes the opening weekend of MAC play at Buffalo on Saturday at 5 p.m.
