AKRON, Ohio โKent State struck first in Friday night's Mid-American Conference opener at James A. Rhodes Arena but ultimately fell to rival Akron, 3-1 (27-25, 15-25, 18-25, 23-25). The match was the first contest of the 2017-18 Crystal Clinic Wagon Wheel Challenge between the two school athletics departments.
The Golden Flashes (2-10, 0-1 MAC) held a 54-48 advantage in digs and had just one fewer kill than the Zips. However, Akron posted its season-best mark for aces (14) and blocks (13) to score valuable points.
Senior Kelsey Bittinger had a match-high 17 kills while hitting .317 and added eight digs. Senior Heather Younkin added eight kills. ย
Senior Challen Geraghty, led all players with 18 digs. Freshman Natalie Tagala led the Flashes with 34 assistsย to go with 11 digs forย her third straight double-double.
Kent State completes the opening weekend of MAC play at Buffalo on Saturday at 5 p.m.
