Dunlap Places Third in First College Race at Tommy Evans Invitational

NORTON, Ohio — The Kent State men's and women's cross country teams waited out a rainstorm before kicking off the 2017 season at the Tommy Evans Invitational Thursday (Sept. 7) at Silver Creek Metro Park.
Freshman Maddie Dunlap paced the women's team, placing third in her first collegiate race with a time of 18:09.8, as Kent State went 3-2 in the 5k race. Redshirt sophomore Sam Goodman was the top finisher for the men, finishing sixth at 15:21.2. The Golden Flashes went 1-2 in a 5k race that was shortened from its original 4-mile course.
Due to NCAA rules governing scoring between Division I and non-Division I teams, the event was scored as dual meets between all competing teams.
The women defeated Cleveland State (26-31), Robert Morris (15-50) and Youngstown State (18-41) and narrowly lost to Akron (25-32) and Malone (26-30).
Three Flashes joined Dunlap with top-15 finishes. Redshirt sophomore Jaimie Adams (18:33.4) took 9th, redshirt sophomore Olivia Davis (18:41.0) placed 12th and freshman Nicole Fleming (18:41.4) finished 13th. Junior Sarah Pack completed the course in 19:14.4 for 25th-place to round out the team's scorers.
The men defeated Youngstown State (19-45) and lost to Akron (16-45) and Malone (20-40).
Four Flashes joined Goodman with top-25 finishes. Senior Nick Schank (15:39.3) placed 13th, junior Brandon Avers (15:43.6) finished 16th, sophomore Josh Gogan (15:57.0) took 20th and freshman Sam Michael (16:06.2) came in 23rd.
The Golden Flashes return to action Sept. 23 at the site of the 2017 MAC Cross Country Championships for the RedHawk Rumble in Oxford, Ohio.
