KENT, Ohio- The Kent State men's basketball program is gearing up for its 103rd season as eighth-year head coach Rob Senderoff and the Flashes appeared at the Northeast Ohio Coaches vs. Cancer Media Day, hosted by Cleveland State on Tuesday.
For the second-straight year, the American Cancer Society showcased its Northeast Ohio Coaches vs Cancer doubleheader with a media day that was hosted at the Wolstein Center. The event showcased the head coaches and players from the four teams that compete in the doubleheader from Akron, Cleveland State, Kent State, and Youngstown State.
The four coaches, CSU's Dennis Felton, Akron's John Groce, Kent State's Rob Senderoff and YSU's Jerrod Calhoun started the event by speaking about the impact of what the  Coaches vs Cancer doubleheader has on the communities beyond the game.
"The event is more meaningful than just the games," Senderoff said. "Cancer has impacted everyone in this room in some way and to be able to do something on our end to help fight the fight makes it a great event for not only us coaching, but competing for this cause as well."
Senderoff introduced Kent State's seniors that were in attendance in Jalen Avery, Akiean Frederick, and Jaylin Walker, and spoke about how their leadership has played a big part in the meshing of a new faced team.
"The foundation of this team is that we play for our seniors every year, and I expect these three guys to lead us after having successful seasons for us. We played our first exhibition game last Sunday and 6-of-the-10 guys played, didn't play in a game at the Division I level last year. To see us mesh day in and day out led by our seniors understanding our culture and expectations, the team feeds off of that and we've started the season the way you would want to start."
Senderoff continued by talking about the adjustments of play with the newer personnel going into this season, "We will play a little bit differently this year than we have in previous seasons. Regardless of who's on the team and us playing smaller,we are going to compete and play with toughness and for each other."
Kent State opens the 2018-19 campaign against Cleveland State. On Saturday, Nov. 10, the Flashes are scheduled to close the annual basketball doubleheader against Cleveland State at 7 p.m. Akron and Youngstown State will kick-off the event at 4:30 p.m.
