Flashes Win Fourth Straight Behind DiNardo’s Overtime Heroics

AKRON, Ohio – The Kent State soccer team (8-5-1, 4-2-0 MAC) won its fourth straight match at Akron (4-8-2, 1-4-1 MAC) in thrilling double-overtime fashion behind senior Dominique DiNardo's goal in the 102nd minute. The Golden Flashes won their eighth match in a row against the rival Zips and posted a shutout for the third time this season.
DiNardo scored her second goal of the season on a chain that was started by redshirt freshman goalkeeper Faith O'Neill's pass to sophomore Cameron Shedenhelm who lofted the ball over the Zips' defense. DiNardo scored from 30 yards out in the top right shelf of the goal for the first game-winner of her career.
It was defensive battle for most of the match with the Golden Flashes have an 11-9 shot advantage after regulation. Kent State's defense did not allow an Akron shot during the overtime periods and the Zips only had four shots on goal all match.
Kent State is now 2-0-1 in overtime matches and won their other extra time contest, 2-1, on Sept. 13th at Syracuse.
O'Neill (6-4-1) earned her second career clean sheet in conference play and made four saves on four shots on goal. Akron's Erin McKinney (2-7-1) made six saves on seven shots on goal.
The Flashes also earned a full point in the Crystal Clinic Wagon Wheel Challenge to extend Kent State's lead to 1.5-0.
Kent State stays on the road next weekend on Friday, Oct. 12 at 7 p.m. at Mid-American Conference leader Bowling Green and Sunday, Oct. 14 at 1 p.m. against Toledo.
