The Kent State Athletics crowdfunding campaign was taken to another level last month. In only its second year, the athletic department more than doubled its number of donors and dollars raised compared to a successful 2017 crowdfunding campaign.
On Nov 1, 2018, 16 teams requested funding for various projects to meet needs within their programs. With an initial overall goal of $100,000, the 16 micro-campaigns started by The Golden Flashes Club, raised over $150,000 in 27 days, totaling over 1,100 gifts from Golden Flashes supporters all over the globe.
"Crowdfunding is making a very meaningful impact on our student-athlete experience," Associate Athletic Director J Locklier said. "Last year was a big step for us. We were able to build on last year's success and provide a real boost to all of our programs. Our Director of The Golden Flashes Club Greg Moon, our coaches, and our partners in Institutional Advancement have done an amazing job engaging all of our KSU donors, fans, friends, and alumni."
The crowdfunding campaign coincided with the Kent State University's Giving Tuesday initiative, which raised over one million dollars in November.
Kent State's baseball and track & field/cross country programs both set University micro-campaign records. Baseball's $40,000 from 150 donations was the highest amount, while the track & field/cross-country program had a record 211 donors, securing $19,500.
University Hospitals Sports Medicine and The Kowbell Krew, each made matching funds of $5,000 and $3,700 on Nov. 1, to launch the campaign.
This crowdfunding campaign utilized Classy, an online and mobile fundraising platform, in partnership with The Division of Institutional Advancement. The peer-to-peer functionality allows student-athletes and fans to share personal crowdfunding profiles in support of a campaign.
