CLEVELAND – Sophomore Andrew McNally won his second 184-pound title of the season Saturday at the Cleveland State Open. McNally was one of five Golden Flashes with top six finishes Saturday at Woodling Gym.
"Andrew was amazing today. He dominated every match," Head Coach Jim Andrassy said.
McNally went 4-0 with a pin and a major decision in his first and second bouts respectively. He allowed only two points in four matches. In his final bout, McNally topped Northwestern's Jack Jessen 5-1, moving to 18-4 on the season.
"He's got a few moves that are really hard to stop," Andrassy said of McNally's 14 bonus-point wins this season.
Sophomore Cory Simpson (141) dropped his opening bout, prior to capturing four straight victories in a sixth-place finish.
"Like several guys on our team, Cory was a bit of a roller coaster today," Andrassy said. "In his first match, he was not at his best, but he wrestled really, really well in those four wins. Then his last match was a bit of a letdown."
The Flashes placed two wrestlers at 197 as Shane Mast and Colin McCracken finished fourth and sixth respectively. Mast reached the semifinals, while McCracken earned three convincing wins with scores of 7-0, 10-4, 9-4.
"Shane looked as good as he ever has at 197 and Colin's starting to grow into the weight class" Andrassy said of both Mast and McCracken, who have spent time at 184.
Redshirt freshman Spencer Berthold went 4-2 in a sixth-place finish at heavyweight. Berthold dropped his opening match to eventual runner-up Toby Cahill of Clarion, but responded with a first period pin of Notre Dame's Joshua Pearson.
"Spencer is getting better," Andrassy said. "It didn't happen as fast as we wanted it to, but like several other guys on the team, he's showing a lot of improvement."
Sophomore Harry Feuer and redshirt freshman Colin Schuster both reached the consolation semifinals of the 133-pound bracket. Competing unattached at 165, Brady Chrisman reached the consolation semifinals with a 2-2 mark.
Redshirt freshmen Kody Komara (149) and Joe Andrassy (157) and sophomore Tomas Gutierrez (125) all went 2-2.
"We're at our best when we're following up on shots and moves with other moves," Andrassy said. "We've put an emphasis on that at practice and when in happens in competition, it makes all the difference. That's where we have to become more consistent as a team."
Starters Jake Ferri (125), Tim Rooney (133) and Dylan Barreiro all took a break from competition.
The Golden Flashes return to action Tuesday, Dec. 18, in a dual meet at Edinboro.
