FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. - Kent State (5-6) never trailed in a 23-14 win over SIU Edwardsville Saturday at the South Beach Duals. The Golden Flashes split a pair of neutral site Mid-American Conference dual meets on day one of the eight-mat event inside the Fort Lauderdale Convention Center.
No. 6 Missouri won its 27th consecutive dual meet with a 44-0 victory in the Flashes' first dual of the day. The Tiger lineup included five wrestlers ranked in the Top 15, helping the defending MAC champions improve to 8-0 on the season.
"We were much better in the second one today and not because of the competition," Head Coach Jim Andrassy said. "We were moving around better and finishing our moves."
Following a tough setback, SIUE headed over to Kent State's mat as the two programs faced off as MAC opponents for the first time. Sophomore Jake Ferri (125) got the Flashes rolling with a 15-5 major decision.
"Jake's been wrestling with a lot more confidence now that he's got a little more experience," Andrassy said.
Junior Tim Rooney (133) kept the bonus points coming with an 18-2 technical fall over Jake Blaha. Rooney converted multiple tilts to give the Flashes a 9-0 team lead.
Sophomore Cory Simpson (141) made it three straight wins for the Flashes with a 12-8 decision over Lucas Bernal.
The Cougars responded with back-to-back wins, before senior Isaac Bast (165) extended the team lead to 16-6 with a 12-4 major decision over Nate Higgins.
"Isaac kept coming and (mentally) broke him in the third to get a lot of his points," Andrassy said.
Sophomore Dylan Barreiro (174) continued another string of three straight Kent State wins with a 9-4 decision over Kevin Gschwendtner.
Sophomore Andrew McNally (184) put the dual out of reach with a 15-5 major decision over Sergio Villalobos. McNally raced out to a 6-0 lead with a takedown and four-point turn in the first period.
"We thought he had the Missouri guy pinned, but we didn't get the call," Andrassy said of McNally's day. "But he did a good job of bouncing back after that loss and really controlled his second match."
Kent State will finish out the South Beach Duals taking on No. 9 Minnesota Sunday at 11 a.m., followed by a 1 p.m. tilt with Michigan State.
