
Flashes Await MAC & Big Ten Foes at South Beach Duals

Coming off a promising victory at Edinboro, Kent State (4-5) will be tested this weekend (Dec. 29-30) at the South Beach Duals inside the Fort Lauderdale Convention Center.ย The Golden Flashes open Mid-American Conference competition Saturday taking on No. 6 Missouri at 11 a.m., followed by SIU Edwardsville.ย
On Sunday, the Flashes tangle with a pair of Big Ten opponents, beginning with No. 9 Minnesota at 11 a.m.ย Kent State will take on Michigan State in its fourth and final dual of the event.ย Along with dual competition, select wresters on the trip could compete in a mini tournament.

Last Time Out
In one of its best performances of the season, Kent State earned a 26-12 road victory over Edinboro.ย The Flashes won six matches filled with bonus points, while dropping a pair of down-to-the-wire bouts, including one in overtime.

- Sophomore 125-pounder Jake Ferri is 5-1 in dual meets, including a win at Penn State.
- Andrew McNally was named MAC Wrestler of the Week on Dec. 20, after winning a 184-pound title at the Cleveland State Open.
- Spencer Berthold (285) and Cory Simpson (141) each placed sixth at Cleveland State after winning four consecutive consolation bracket matches.
- Junior Tim Rooney won a 133-pound title at the Cougar Clash on Dec. 2.
- Last month, Rooney was named MAC Male Scholar Athlete of the Week, after going 5-1 in a third place finish at the Navy Classic.
- McNally was also named MAC Wrestler of the Week on Nov. 7, after winning a Clarion Open title and going 8-0 in his opening weekend.
- Senior Isaac Bast (165) and sophomore Dylan Barreiro (174) also won titles at the Clarion Open.
- McNally, Bast and Kody Komara (149) all placed fourth at the Navy Classic.
- The NWCA honored Kent State for having the second highest grade point average in the nation last season at 3.497, trailing only Harvard.
- Since 2005-06 (Jim Andrassy's third season), Kent State is 162-95-1 in dual meets and 51-27-1 in MAC duals
- Freshman Tim Wallace has won a pair of open tournament crowns, competing unattached at 184.ย He's reached the finals three of the four tournaments he's competed in.
- McNally leads the Flashes in wins (19), bonus-point victories (15) and pins (9).
- Bast, the lone active senior on the team, leads the Flashes with 89 career victories.
The Opponents
Missouri (6-0) placed second at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational.ย Last year's MAC Wrestler of the Year Jaydin Eierman (141) and fellow All-American Daniel Lewis (174) each placed second in Las Vegas.ย Freshman heavyweight Zach Elam placed third, while senior 133-pounder John Erneste placed fifth.ย The Tigers' dual wins include Illinois, Virginia and Virginia Tech.
SIU Edwardsville is in its first season in the Mid-American Conference.ย The Cougars (0-3) opened their dual season winning 5-of-10 matches in a 21-15 loss to Indiana.ย Earlier this month at the Cougar Clash, SIUE was led by junior 149-pounder Tyshawn Williams and senior 197-pounder Chris Dulaney, who each placed third.ย Senior 157-pounder Nate Higgins placed fifth.
Minnesota (3-1) had convincing dual victories over Air Force, South Dakota State and Fresno State.ย The Gophers placed sixth at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational.ย Freshman heavyweight Gable Steveson won an individual title in Las Vegas.ย Senior 125-pounder Sean Russell placed third and senior 133-pounder Ethan Lizak placed fourth.ย Lizak is a two-time All-American.
Michigan State (2-0) won the team title at the Navy Classic and finished runner-up at the Reno Tournament of Champions.ย Redshirt freshman 184-pounder Cameron Caffey won an individual title in Reno.ย Sophomore 125-pound Rayvon Foley, senior 133-pounder Anthony Tutolo and senior 141-pounder Austin Eicher all placed second.
