INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The Kent State gymnastics team will have a short trip when it travels to compete in the NCAA Columbus Regional hosted by Ohio State University, the NCAA announced Monday (March 26) afternoon. The competition will begin at 6 p.m. inside St. John Arena on Saturday, April 7.
The Golden Flashes finished the regular season with the Mid-American Conference's top Regional Qualifying Score (RQS) of 195.855, which ranks 34th in the country, to qualify for their 10th NCAA Regional in the past 11 seasons.
The Columbus Regional field also includes No. 3 UCLA, No. 10 Arkansas, No. 15 Boise State, Pitt and host Ohio State. Kent State competed against UCLA during the regular season at the Masters Classic in Lincoln, Nebraska on March 4.
Led by MAC Coach of the Year Brice Biggin, Kent State received standout performances from several underclassmen at the MAC Championships on Saturday. Freshman Abby Fletcher earned a spot on the All-Tournament Team by winning the floor exercise competition outright. Sophomore Sarah McCarty and freshman Toshi Richard tied for third on floor, while freshman Nasha Manitkul-Davis placed in a tie for eighth. Manitkul-Davis and McCarty tied for seventh on vault to give each a pair of top-10 finishes.
The top two teams and the top two all-around competitors (who are not on an advancing team) from each regional will receive an automatic berth to the national championships in St. Louis, Missouri, April 20-21, hosted by the University of Missouri, Columbia and the St. Louis Sports Commission. The top two teams from the Columbus, Raleigh and Tuscaloosa regionals will compete in the first semifinal, and the top two teams from the Minneapolis, Salt Lake City and University Park regionals will compete in the second semifinal.
In addition, the event winners at each regional site will advance to the national championships (in that event only) if they are not part of a qualifying team or an all-around qualifier.
