Errors Cost Flashes in Weekend Finale

DURHAM, N.C. – Kent State (9-6) committed a season-high four errors in an 8-0 shutout loss at the hands of Duke (12-6) on Sunday afternoon at Duke Softball Stadium. Only three of the Blue Devils' eight runs were earned on the day. Kent State only mustered two hits, but Holly Speers singled in the fourth to extend her hitting streak to 14 games.
How It Happened
The Blue Devils went up 3-0 in the first inning. The first run scored on a throwing error by Speers, which opened the floodgates for Duke to add on two more runs.
In the third inning, Duke hit a two-RBI single to left center that brought and one more run crossed the plate on a throwing error by Speers. Later in the frame a bases loaded free pass brought in another unearned run, to put Duke up, 7-0.
The Blue Devils scored their final run in the fourth on a double down the left field line.
Madi Huck (6-1) suffered her first loss of the season and threw 2.2 innings allowing six hits with seven runs, however only two were earned. Olivia Sborlini threw 1.1 frames allowing two hits and one earned run.

Kent State plays in its final non-conference tournament next weekend, March 10 and 11 at the Racer Classic hosted by Murray State. The Flashes square off against UIC and Evansville on Saturday at 9 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. respectively. On Sunday KSU takes on Oakland at 11:30 a.m. and the host Racers at 2 p.m.
