HAMPTON, Va. – Andrew McNally, Isaac Bast and Spencer Berthold all recorded pins for Kent State (6-9, 1-2 MAC) Friday, but the Golden Flashes came up short against both Old Dominion and Chattanooga on day one of the Virginia Duals. The Monarchs topped the Flashes 30-10 in a conference dual at Hampton Coliseum, while the Mocs sealed late wins at 141, 165 and 174 in a 21-15 victory.
A third period pin by Bast (165) against Shane Jones gave Kent State its first win against Old Dominion. Two matches later, McNally (184) continued his string of bonus-point victories in a 10-0 major decision of Dean Drugac.
Sophomore Dylan Barreiro (174) and junior Shane Mast (197) each endured one-point losses against ODU. A third period rally by Mast ran out of time after a reversal and two-point near fall closed the gap.
Bast, Barreiro and Cory Simpson (141) all found themselves in tie matches late in the third period against Chattanooga, but all of them allowed takedowns. Simpson's setback came in sudden victory.
McNally surrendered an opening takedown to Chattanooga's Dominic Lampe, but gradually wore him down. Midway through the third period McNally locked up a cradle and methodically positioned himself to get Lampe's shoulders flat.
Berthold made it two pins in the dual with a first period fall against Connor Tolley. Trailing 2-1, Berthold whipped Tolley off his feet for a takedown and used the elbow control from it to execute a cradle of his own.
Junior Tim Rooney (133) gave the Flashes their initial win over the Mocs with a 6-3 decision of Jake Huffine. As the final seconds of the second period ticked away, Rooney hit a granby roll for a reversal. In the third, he converted a front headlock to an ankle pick takedown to extend his lead.
The Flashes will conclude their weekend at the Virginia Duals Saturday, taking on Lock Haven at 10 a.m.
