
Bates and McNally Earn Victories at Mountaineer Invitational

BOONE, NC- Kent State wrestling had a strong showing at the Mountaineer Invitational hosted by Appalachian State.
Tyler Bates and Andrew McNally picked up bracket wins on the championship side while Jake Ferri took home a title on the Open side on Saturday.
At 174, McNally lived up to the billing of the top-ranked wrestler and picked up a fall, a major decision and two decision wins by six and seven points, respectfully to cruise to the title.
Tyler Bates got a bye in the first round then upset top-ranked wrestler Colt Doyle of Oregon State in a 3-2 decision in the second round. Bates then picked up two more close decision wins, including a 8-6 win in the title match to take home the win.
At 125, Jake Ferri, the lone Kent State wrestler that was in the Open portion of the event, went 3-0 with an assortment of wins, taking home a tech fall in round one, a decision in round two and a major decision in the championship round to take home the title.
In the championship portion, Earl Blake rebounded nicely after a tough opening round decision loss to defeat Michael Pappaconstantinou by a major decision. Blake would end up with a seventh-place finish after falling in a decision to Graham Shore of Air Force in the following round
At 133, Tim Rooney, seeded third, made a strong run through the bracket. He picked up wins over Air Force and West Virginia wrestlers before being tripped by eventual champion Devan Turner of Oregon State. Rooney rebounded to win his final two matches, securing a third-place finish and a 4-1 overall record on the day.
At 141 pounds, Cory Simpson picked up a major decision win in the opening round before dropping his next match to the eventual runner-up in Dresden Simon of Central Michigan. Simpson then would lose a close decision to Brandon Bright of Gardner-Webb in the consolation bracket. Raphael Rodriguez was tripped up in both matches at 141 on the day.
Kody Komara dropped his first match of the day in the championship round, but rebounded impressively. Komara earned a fall in his next match and would win by decision in two more to rally to a 4-1 day and a fifth-place finish. Ian Senz dropped both his matches at 149 in the championship bracket.
Brady Chrisman earned a bye at 157 and after a win in his first match, he dropped a decision to the eventual runner-up Matt Zovistoski of the host Mountaineers. Chrisman responded well, picking up a pair of 6-5 decisions to capture third place in the bracket and secure a 3-1 day.
Kade Byland had a strong showing at 165. Byland dropped a 4-3 decision to the fourth-ranked wrestler in the bracket and eventual runner-up Tracy Hubbard of Central Michigan. Byland would pick up a pair of wins, including a sudden victory before getting edged out 6-5 in the third-place match.
Lane Hinkle went 2-2 for the Golden Flashes at 184 including dropping a decision to teammate Shane Mast. After dropping his first match, Mast made a nice run through the consolation bracket, ultimately securing a fifth-place finish and a 3-2 day overall.
After receiving a bye, Colin McCracken posted a 7-2 decision win over J.J. Dixon of Oregon State. He was then edged in a 7-6 decision to the eventual runner-up Landon Pelham of Central Michigan. Undeterred, McCracken responded with a pair of decision victories including a 5-0 shutout in the third-place match. It was not a great day at 285 for Spencer Berthold, who fell victim to a pair of falls in his two matches.
