
Golden Flashes Grounded by Rockets in Midweek MACtion Thriller

TOLEDO, Ohio – The Kent State football team (3-6, 2-3 MAC) opened its midweek #MACtion slate with a 35-33 loss at the hands of Toledo (6-3, 3-2 MAC) on Tuesday night.
The Golden Flashes started slow against the Rockets but picked it up late in the first quarter with a 26-yard field goal by Matthew Trickett followed by a lightning strike from Dustin Crum to Mike Carrigan on a 70-yard touchdown.
Toledo's Bryant Koback scored his second touchdown of the first half to give the Rockets a 21-10 lead. The Flashes quickly responded with a 5-play, 65-yard drive that took just 1:32 and ended with a 28-yard touchdown from Crum to Xavier Williams for his first career score. Williams finished with a career-high 63 rushing yards as well as a career-high 28 receiving yards.
Another Toledo touchdown late in the third quarter sent the Rockets into the halftime locker room with a 28-17 advantage.
Jamal Parker snagged his ninth career interception and third this season on the Rockets' first drive of the second half. The turnover led to a 47-yard Trickett field goal to pull the Flashes within eight, 28-20.
The Kent State defense came to play in the third quarter, holding Toledo to just 63 yards and zero points. Crum scrambled on third and goal from the 11-yard line to make the score 28-27 with 1:23 to go in the quarter. Crum finished 14-for-18 passing with 257 yards and four total touchdowns.
Shakif Seymour scored his second touchdown of the evening to extend Toledo's lead, 35-27, but Kent State used a 15-play, 70-yard drive that was capped off by a five-yard touchdown pass from Crum to Keenan Orr. Crum was stuffed at the two-yard line on the ensuing two-point conversion attempt, and the Flashes fell to the Rockets 35-33.
Kavious Price tallied a career-high 102 receiving yards on four receptions, including a 52-yarder. Will Matthews recorded his fourth consecutive game with 50 or more rushing yards, totaling 55 yards on the ground against the Rockets.
Mandela Lawrence-Burke set a career-high with 15 tackles, while Cepeda Phillips also recorded a career-high with 13 stops. Keith Sherald Jr. also made 11 tackles.
Kent State will home for a two-game home stretch beginning on Thursday, Nov. 14, against Buffalo before concluding their regular season home schedule on Saturday, Nov. 23, with a visit from Ball State.
