Berthold Leads Flashes at Cleveland State Open

CLEVELAND, OHIO- The Golden Flashes had four wrestlers place fourth or better, led by Spencer Berthold's second-place finish and Kent State totaled the second-most team points at the 15th annual Cleveland State Open.
Kent State totaled 419 points, second only to the host Vikings on Saturday. Berthold led the way with his runner-up finish. The heavyweight had two victories by fall and a third by major decision en route to a 3-1 day.
Jake Ferri ended up with a third-place finish at 125 for the Golden Flashes. After a first-round bye, Ferri won by technical fall and by decision in the quarterfinals. After being edged by decision in the semi-final, Ferri closed out a 3-1 day on the mat with a 7-3 decision in the third-place match.
Andrew McNally nearly made it back-to-back CSU Open titles, but settled for a fourth-place finish at 174. McNally rolled through the first three rounds, winning two matches by major decision and a third by technical fall. McNally was then edged in the semifinal, ending up on the wrong end of a 11-9 decision before issuing a medical forfeit in the third-place bout.
Colin McCracken followed a similar path to a fourth-place finish at 197. McCracken won a pair of decisions in his first two matches. In the semi-final, he dropped a defensive match by a 3-1 decision. McCracken then also issued a medical forfeit in the third-place match.
After dropping the first match of the day at 184, Shane Mast rolled through the consolation bracket. Mast won his final five matches of the day to take home fifth-place honors.
In total, 22 Kent State wrestlers were in action on Saturday with starters Earl Blake and Tim Rooney getting the weekend off, the full results of the Open can be seen below. The Flashes will have a quick turnaround, hitting the road to take on NIU and Wisconsin in a pair of dual matches on Wednesday and Thursday. Both matches will start at 8 p.m. eastern.
